Schultz and Summers Engineering Ranks No. 3832 on the 2010 Inc. 5000

NEW YORK, November 12, 2010 -- Inc. magazine ranked Schultz and Summers Engineering NO. 3832 on its fourth annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. Music website Pandora, convenience store chain 7-Eleven, Brooklyn Brewery, and Radio Flyer, maker of the iconic children’s red wagon, are among the prominent brands featured on this year’s list. Owner Bob Summers said, “It is an honor to be included in a list with some of the fastest growing companies in America. SSE has gone from a small company with a handful of employees in Poplar Bluff Missouri to a growing operation providing engineering services in seven different states throughout the mid west.”
“The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. president Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.”
Schultz and Summers Engineering is a Missouri based Civil Engineering Company with offices in Poplar Bluff, Branson, Lake Ozark and New Orleans. They have provided drinking water and sewer services to over 40 communities in Missouri. To date, they have helped those communities obtain over $80,000,000 in public funding. They have set up several large states of the art USACE validated testing labs and are one of the select companies that have been approved for Blanket Purchase Agreement with the USACE. They have also provided surveying services to a variety of clients from utilities, MoDOT, USACE, cities, corporations, small business, and individuals. SSE is a HubZone certified company and can be found at www.schultzandsummers.com
The 2010 Inc. 5000, unveiled today on Inc.com, serves as a unique illustration of the profound changes taking place in the U.S. economy. The Government Services sector showed the biggest gain in terms of the number of companies on the list, up 33 percent from last year to 335 companies. Government Services was also the second-fastest-growing sector in terms of median revenue growth, posting a 202 percent gain over the 2006-2009 measuring period. More than half of these companies are based in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The fastest-growing sector by median revenue growth was Real Estate, now just a tiny group of 38 young, small companies, which showed 231 percent median growth over the period. (There were 121 Real Estate firms on the inaugural Inc. 5000 in 2007.) Business Products & Services is the top industry by number of companies on the list (640) and total revenue ($80.7 billion), while Health is the biggest by total employment (287,726 jobs).

Despite the fact that most of this year’s measuring period of 2006-2009 took place during the latest recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $321.6 billion, up more than 50 percent from last year. The effects of the recession are seen, however, in the median three-year growth rate, which dropped to 96 percent from last year’s 126 percent. This year’s Inc. 5000 employ a record 1.4 million people, up from one million on last year’s list. With unemployment remaining stubbornly high, policymakers and business leaders will do well to look to the Inc. 5000 companies for fresh ideas on achieving growth and creating jobs.
This marks the second time SSE has been ranked by Inc. 500, with the first being in 2003. Company founder Stan Schultz concluded, “Our employees work hard to provide a quality product to our customers. This results in new clients seeking our services and the reason we have experienced such rapid growth as a company.”
Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found on www.inc.com/5000.

Gravois Arm Sewer District Funded $8M for Westside Service Expansion

By Janet Dabbs/LakeExpo.com - http://lakeexpo.com/articles/2010/10/27/top_news/06.txt

Published: Thursday, October 28, 2010 10:16 AM CDT

GRAVOIS MILLS, Mo. (LakeExpo.com) - The Gravois Arm Sewer District has received funding to launch Phase 3 of service expansion. The funds are slated to extend sewer service to customers in the Millstone Condominium area, Red Hollow Road, and Towering Oaks area, including Tony’s Point, Pistol Point, Triangle Cove, Coconuts, Lake Road 5-18, Done Wanderin Road and the Morgan County R-III Elementary School.

GASD received loan funds of $5,009,000 and a grant of $2,064,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Other funding includes a $1 million Environmental Protection Agency grant and $68,550 from a USDA Rural Business Enterprise grant

“I am very excited that GASD has received the additional funding to expand because they are in an area where they have many of the older septic systems. GASD is working towards our long term plan of moving septics off the lake,” said Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance Director Donna Swall. “We are enjoying a very wonderful healthy Lake of the Ozarks right now, but many of our older folks are getting ready to retire to the lake full time and many of those to older homes with outdated septic systems. Our studies point toward needing a long term septic plan for the lake area and this is right in line with that plan.”

The existing Millstone Condominiums pumping station will be changed to discharge to the recently completed GASD treatment plant located behind the Gravois Mills VFW. The system will also pick up the Serenity Cove treatment plant and other waste in the area. The system will provide 882 users and serve a population of 5,303 residents. GASD currently serves the town of Gravois Mills, Blue Anchor and Millstone Condominiums, Old Eight Road and Route P subdivisions.

“This project is very important to GASD’s ongoing quest to extend sewer to its customers. Once this project is complete the “backbone” of the entire system will be complete and smaller neighborhood projects will be able to be constructed as additional funds become available,” said Stan Schultz, Principle Engineer for the project, of Schultz & Summers Engineering.

According to GASD manager Ray Metscher, the next step will be to obtain the necessary easements and meet all the requirements of the letter of conditions. They will go out to bid, wait 30 days, and construction should begin within 30 to 60 days.

“We are glad to be moving forward. This is something that should have been done 40 years ago,” said Metscher.

The district is shooting to begin work March 1, 2011.

Pike Creek Sewer Phase III Starts Up

Pike Creek Common Sewer District

BUTLER COUNTY, MO - The Pike Creek Common Sewer District was happy to announce that the District has successfully brought over 175 new customers online with the near completion of their Phase III project. The new $1.5 million dollar sanitary sewer project design was completed in 2009 by Schultz & Summers Engineering and funded through USDA-Rural Development and the Department of Natural Resources.

Schultz & Summers principal, Bob Summers stated, "Due to the watchful eye of the Board, the project has been constructed below the original budget and in a fashion that worked well with the public. Over 175 customers were connected allowing the system to collect and treat wastewater for over 1,400 homes in our area. By all standards, the project has been a great success!"

The Board wishes the public to know that cleanup will be completed in September. Larry Wells, a board member said, "We've asked the contractor to hold off on final cleanup until the weather will allow for grass to grow. The Board only wants to have to disturb our customer's yards one more time and the weather won't make it possible until September."

Dangerous E Coli Levels Closes Missouri Beaches

SSE’s efforts to help communities handle their waste water issues is important to all our citizens. Here is a story in the springfield News leader about the problem e coli have been causing at a few of Missouri’s lakes this summer. LINK HERE.

Beaches at Three State Parks Close
Swimming beaches at three Missouri state parks will be closed this weekend due to E. coli levels higher than the standard set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Water samples drawn Monday from public beaches at Pomme de Terre, Harry S Truman and Wakonda state parks showed E. coli levels in excess of the department’s standard for state park beaches. The public beach at Wakonda State Park will remain closed because of E. coli levels approximately three times higher than the department’s standard for a single sample. Results from Monday’s sample taken from the park’s public beach showed 727 E. coli colonies per 100 milliliters of water.
Both Hermitage Beach at Pomme de Terre State Park and the Day Use Beach at Harry S Truman State Park have been closed previously this season because of E. coli.
Monday’s sample from Hermitage Beach had 980.4 E. coli colonies per 100 milliliters of water, while the Truman State Park Day Use Beach sample contained 920.8 colonies per 100 milliliters.
The Truman State Park Campground Beach and the Pittsburg Beach at Pomme de Terre State Park both met the department standard and will remain open for the weekend. To provide a safer beach experience for park visitors, the Department of Natural Resources will close beaches at state parks if a single sample is above 235 E. coli colonies per 100 milliliters of water, which is also the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s single-sample guideline for a swimming beach.
The three closed beaches have been posted with signs notifying visitors of the closure and will remain closed until E. coli levels fall below the department standard.
The 1,054-acre Wakonda State Park is located south of LaGrange in Lewis County.

The 734-acre Pomme de Terre State Park, which has two separate locations along the 7,800-acre Pomme De Terre Lake, is located near the communities of Pittsburg and Hermitage in Hickory County. The 1,440-acre Harry S Truman State Park is located west of Warsaw in Benton County.

No other state park beaches tested high for E. coli levels; however, bacterial levels often rise after heavy rains and lake users should use their judgment when swimming after heavy rains. The latest information on beach closings at state parks is available online at http://mostateparks.com.

E. coli is a bacteria found in the intestinal tract of warm-blooded animals, including humans. While most strains of E. coli are harmless, some strains can cause gastrointestinal illness.
